Economic Outlook
The Textile and Fashion Industry is the second largest consumer industry in Germany and employs 120,000 people on national level. Ca. 280,000 employees, who work all over the world for German companies, can be added. Key driver are the Technical Textiles which can be found in many hightech products, generating about half of the industry's revenue. The exceptionally high export quota (43%) mirrors the appreciation of German textile and fashion goods on international markets and underlines the competitiveness of the companies which had to face considerable structural changes.
The textile and fashion industry nearly overcame the economic crisis in 2010. The Technical Textiles recovered especially well. The signs are set to 'growth': Both the textile and especially the fashion industry have an optimistic outlook on 2011 regarding revenue, investments and profits. (see survey)
Overall, the industry has not yet reached the pre-crisis level of 2008. However, we currently forecast an increase in revenue of ca. 4 to 5% in 2011 compared to the previous year. (Details)
The German textile and fashion industry can be characterised by a high level of flexibility and innovation, thereby able to react well to economic volatility. The strong and innovative brands and designs of German textile and fashion companies are in much demand worldwide with often having no competitors: This will also be the case in future.
